Anti Wrinkle Injections

Most people nowadays are aware of anti-wrinkle injections. TGA regulations do not allow us to mention any products by name. You may have tried them yourself or you may know someone who has.

Dr Bernard Leung finds that many of his patients want to do something about their fine lines and wrinkles, but are sometimes shy to try this treatment because of the perceived stigma associated with it. Whilst it may have been taboo in the past, this has become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in Australia and overseas. Many people may not even realise that their family or friends have actually tried it or are having regular treatments. If performed correctly, this treatment can be effective at removing unwanted fine lines and wrinkles, without people even knowing you have had anything done.

Frown lines (glabellar lines)

There is a tendency amongst many of us to frown when we are concentrating or squinting. Over time these expressions lead to deeply ingrained furrows or wrinkles in between the eye brows. Some people may comment that you look unhappy, annoyed or even cranky. We have a number of treatment options to make you look and feel relaxed.

When the lines are still in their earlier stages of development, they are relatively easily treatable with wrinkle reducing injections. More permanently and deeply ingrained frown lines may warrant additional treatments, such as dermal fillers or laser resurfacing (Pearl and Pearl Fractional laser treatments). However, in younger patients, even ingrained lines may regress over a period of months if regular wrinkle injections are carried out such that the muscle weakening effect of these injections are not allowed to wear off.

In patients where volume loss is noticeable in the brow bone area, dermal fillers could be placed along the outer third of the brow to complement treatment to the frown area.

To achieve the most natural looking result, Dr Bernard Leung recommends treating the adjacent areas to avoid any sharp demarcation.

Forehead lines

Horizontal forehead lines are caused by the frontalis muscle. This is the major muscle of the forehead and it is responsible for elevating the eyebrows. There is a tendency for eye brows and eyelids to sag with the aging process. Most of us compensate by using the forehead muscles to counteract this, thereby developing horizontal forehead lines. This muscle is also responsible for various facial expressions such as looking surprised.

Dr Leung recommends the use of wrinkle reducing injections for this area. However, he cautions against excessive dosage in this area which may cause the eyebrows to sag.  He aims to treat this area in conjunction with the frown area to achieve a natural harmonious look.

Crow’s feet

A bright shiny disarming smile is usually accompanied by lines radiating outwards from the corner of the eye. However, because of our sunny climate many of us have spent a lot of time squinting, producing deep or extensive crow’s feet lines. This area responds extremely well to treatment. Over-treatment of this area can lead to an artificial smile. At Facial Artistry we pride ourselves in treating this area sensitively in order to maintain your radiant smile.

What are anti-wrinkle injections?

The mimetic muscles in the face are unlike other muscles in the body in that one end of the muscle attaches to the underlying bone, whereas the superficial end attaches to the undersurface of the dermis of the skin. The purpose of these muscles is to allow facial expressions to be made. These muscles contract when instructed by the brain to do so. The brain issues the instruction by firing nerve impulses, which takes the form of a neurotransmitter at the nerve endings. Wrinkles can be softened by selectively weakening the muscles that cause them. The way anti-wrinkle injection works is by blocking the release of neurotransmitter at the nerve endings. This forms the ’Relaxation’ part of the 5R principles of Facial Rejuvenation. It is administered by a few tiny injections under the skin. The entire procedure only takes a few minutes, depending upon the number of areas being treated.

Is the treatment painful?

No. Some people may have had a bad or painful experience with this treatment or know someone who has.

Dr Leung uses several special techniques to minimise any injection-associated discomfort.

Can the injections distort your face and expressions?

Frozen look or facial distortions such as drooping eyebrows, are caused by having too much product injected, or inadvertent injections into the wrong muscles.

Dr Leung’s surgical training, thorough understanding of the facial anatomy and artistic sensibilities allow him to consistently accomplish highly natural looking results.

The art of administering anti-wrinkle injections is use the right dose at the right location, taking into account the main causes of wrinkles in that area.

How long do results last?

The injections prevent and reduce facial lines and wrinkles for 3-4 months but sometimes up to six months or longer. Following treatment, the results are not immediately apparent. It usually takes two or three days to begin to take effect, reaching its full potential after about a week to ten days.

Is it safe?

Cosmetic treatment with anti-wrinkle injection is safe in that there are no major or harmful side effects. It has been used to treat children as young as three years of age at much higher doses in the treatment of cerebral palsy to help them walk. It has been used medically for the past 25 years to treat a variety of medical conditions such as nervous ticks and neuromuscular disorders.

What are the side effects?

Common side effects are restricted to minor and temporary redness, and swelling or bruising at the injection site. Very rarely a drooping eyelid or mild double vision is reported. These effects are temporary, lasting one to two weeks, and will occur if the injections are inappropriately placed. Recovery is spontaneous.

Can it be used to stop headaches and excess sweating?

Yes. In many patients anti-wrinkle injection has proven very effective in preventing both migraine and stress headaches. It also reduces armpit sweating by well over 90 percent for an average of 8-10 months.

Can I have these injections when I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

As with all non-essential medications, it should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Is it true that anti-wrinkle injections can be used to prevent the occurrence of new lines and wrinkles?

Yes. Because it relaxes the wrinkle-causing muscles, stopping them from repeatedly creasing the skin and therefore prevents the occurrence of new lines and wrinkles. It is a good preventative treatment.

I have heard that anti-wrinkle injection will produce a blank, expressionless face. Is this true?

No. Three important terms regarding the use of anti-wrinkle injection are character, natural and youthful. Character makes the face interesting, gives insight into the personality and is often very attractive. A natural appearance is achieved by preserving normal expression while relaxing unwanted lines. A youthful appearance is created by softening features that reflect the ageing process, such as crow’s feet, forehead furrows and sagging brows. With careful placement, a talented and experienced injector can achieve a youthful appearance on a patient while maintaining their natural expression with character.

Should I have anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers?

Anti-wrinkle injections weaken the effect of facial muscles pulling on the skin to improve certain facial wrinkles, whereas dermal fillers replenish age-related facial volume loss. Anti-wrinkle injections can also be used to slim down certain parts of the face by relaxing the relevant facial muscles, whilst dermal fillers are used to augment certain parts of the face to make it more aesthetically pleasing. They inherent perform different functions and they are not a replacement or substitute for each other. The two treatments are often complimentary to each other, with a better result achieved when they are used together compared to when only one is used. Dr Leung uses his aesthetic judgement to determine the optimum treatment for you, based on your facial structure and requirement.
